PNG or JPG: which one do you actually need?

PNG and JPG solve different problems. PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is preserved exactly, and it supports transparency. That makes it ideal for logos, screenshots, interface graphics and anything with sharp edges or text. The price is size — a detailed PNG photo can easily weigh five to ten times more than the same image as JPG.

JPG (or JPEG) was designed for photographs. It compresses images by discarding detail your eye barely notices, which shrinks files dramatically while keeping photos looking natural. For web pages, email attachments, social posts and online stores, JPG is almost always the right delivery format: pages load faster, storage lasts longer, and every browser, phone and app on the planet can open it.

A good rule of thumb: work in PNG, publish in JPG. Keep your original PNG as the master copy, and convert a JPG version whenever you need to share or embed the image.

What the quality setting really does

JPG compression is adjustable. Our converter exposes three sensible presets instead of a confusing 0–100 dial:

• High (92) — visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos. Choose it when the image will be viewed large or printed.
• Balanced (85) — the sweet spot used by most publishing platforms. Excellent quality with a substantially smaller file. This is the default for a reason.
• Compact (70) — noticeably lighter files for thumbnails, email or slow connections. Fine detail may soften slightly.

If you are optimizing a website, smaller images are one of the highest-impact speed wins available: they reduce bandwidth, improve Core Web Vitals, and make pages feel instant on mobile connections.

What happens to transparency?

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas cannot survive the conversion. Our converter flattens transparency onto a clean white background — the standard behaviour you see in professional editors. Your privacy, concretely

Your PNG is uploaded over HTTPS, converted immediately, and stored under a random name that nobody can guess. Both the upload and the converted JPG are automatically purged from the server within 6 hours — and neither is ever opened, analysed or shared.
